“The Realists and Saint Augustine: Skepticism, Psychology, and Moral Action in International Relations Thought.”

Loriaux, Michael.  "The Realists and Saint Augustine: Skepticism, Psychology, and Moral Action in International Relations Thought," International Studies Quarterly 36, pp. 401-420, 1992.

Overview:

In this article from International Studies Quarterly, scholar Michael Loriaux argues that Augustinian realism is more radical than those who would appropriate him in the contemporary political sphere realize. Though Augustinian realism shares with its contemporary secular counterpart a skeptical attitude towards moral and political progress, Augustinian realism is more radical than the modern psychological commitment to rational action can admit. This article provides a careful analysis of Augustine’s unique realism and invites the reader to question the entire foundation of the realist view of international politics as a scene of rational strategic action.
