The Alcibiades I was held in the greatest esteem in the Platonic school of antiquity. There was a tradition in fact that placed the dialogue at the head of all of Plato’s works, as the opening to the entire corpus; hence, perhaps, the traditional subtitle, “On the Nature of Man.”
