The major interlocutor of Socrates in this dialogue is Hippias, one of the most renowned sophists at the end of the fifth century. His fellows citizens at Elis, the small city in the northwestern Peloponese, chose him on numerous occasions to represent their interests on diplomatic missions, especially to Sparta. Thanks to an exceptional memory and an astonding faculty of assimilation, he had become acquainted with all the arts and sciences of his time.
