Wolfe, Christopher. “The Confederate Republic in Montesquieu.” Polity 9, no. 4 (July 1, 1977): 427–445.
Montesquieu’s political thought has been of interest to American practitioners and theorists since the early days of the republic. Hamilton and Madison in Federalist No. 9 and No. 10 tried to extract useful knowledge concerning the confederate republic from Montesquieu’s theoretical insights in The Spirit of the Laws. In view of the bearing of Montesquieu’s theory upon contemporary problems of American federalism, Christopher Wolfe raises the question of its practicability. His conclusion inclines toward a negative answer.
