In answering a critique of his book on Marx, Shlomo Avineri cited a
letter from a friend who was in France during les evenements of May
1968. Gilbert, in rebutting this rebuttal, asks how the unnamed corre-
spondent would account for Marx’s reaction to the class conflicts in
modern societies. As the individual concerned, it is only fair that I reply,
since it would be unjust to hold Avineri responsible for the opinions of his
correspondents.”
