Hobbes published a translation of Thucydides’s History of the Peloponnesian War in 1628, long before publishing his own work on political philosophy.  The translation has long been considered a masterful rendering of the ancient Greek and a work of art in its own right.  Furthermore, Hobbes’s presentation of Thucydides’s writing on civil war and democracy sheds light on the opinions Hobbes expresses later in his more famous works.

This volume, edited by David Grene, includes Hobbes’s essay “On the Life and History of Thucydides,” his address to general readers and dedicatory epistle.  Grene offers a new introduction to the work, clarifies a few mistranslations, and annotates generally unfamiliar references.
