The seventeenth century was a period which will ever remain resplendent in the history of science, for truly, no century starting from so little achieved so much.  It was an age of intellectual freedom, of independent thought, an age in which the frontiers of knowledge were pressed forward with restless zeal.  In this scientific renaissance, Descartes played no mean part; it is perhaps not too much to say that in many respects he marks the transition from the ancient to the modern.  He therefore occupies a position of considerable importance in the history of science.
